For Gwendo
For Gwendo is a trio of hand-poured soy candles in a sculpted solid walnut holder, made in remembrance of Gwen, affectionately known as Gwendo. She was an avid dressmaker whose sewing room overflowed with colorful floral fabrics, and it was there that I first encountered the Marimekko designs she loved. Her home was just as considered, filled with Scandinavian mid-century furniture and decor.
I created the water-slide decals, drawing on Marimekko’s bold botanical patterns in coral red, deep blue and green, and dusty lilac, and applied them to the glass vessels. The candles are scented with the floral and citrus notes of her flower garden. The walnut base, finished with Danish oil and a satin clear coat, has soft, flowing curves that echo the mid-century sensibility of her home and give the blooms a warm, grounded place to sit. Lit, the candles bring a bit of her color, craft, and spirit back into the home.
