I created two pedestals for a dining table which will ultimately be paired with a walnut tabletop from another designer. Each pedestal is built from 40 individually cut plywood discs, ranging from 5" to 14" in diameter, stacked and glued into a solid column. The discs vary in scale and are placed asymmetrically along the vertical axis, echoing the balanced, irregular stacking of a stone cairn — each "disc" settling at a different width, drawing the eye up and down the form the way a cairn does. Finished in a custom-mixed black satin, the pedestals read as sculptural architecture on their own, and will anchor a 52" × 30" solid walnut racetrack-oval top once the tabletop is complete.
